We will be sending out information on seed potatoes in the coming weeks (expected arrival in early April), but wanted to give you a heads up that we will not be offering organic seed potatoes this year. We just aren’t able to make the economics of organic seed potatoes work right now, so if you are committed to 100% organic potatoes we encourage you to make other plans.
We will have plenty of non-organic seed potatoes and onion sets available, though. (And also have certified organic onion seeds – start those indoors now!)
🥔 Some information if you are looking at ordering organic seed potatoes: Seed potatoes are somewhat unique in that they are called “certified” seed potatoes if they have been specifically grown for planting (rather than eating) and have been been tested for diseases that you wouldn’t want to introduce into your garden.
A “certified” seed potato is not the same as “certified organic”. If you are committed to organic seed potatoes, you will want to be sure than you are buying “certified organic” seed potatoes and not just “certified”. Expect to pay 5 – 20x more for organic seed potatoes when you factor in shipping.
If you happen to know anyone growing organic seed potatoes in our region, let us know! Shipping is a big part of the cost that makes the economics of them tricky.
